All the Cool Kids Are Wearing Balaclavas

Over a year ago, at a crowded house party in deep Brooklyn, I noticed a man wearing a bright orange balaclava. At the time, it seemed eccentric and out-of-place, but it quickly became a trend. The balaclava went from a rarity to a bubbling trend, infiltrating rap culture and becoming a multi-purpose facemask during the first wave of the Omicron-variant in December 2021. The balaclava can be seen in many different settings, from Paris Fashion Week shows to trendy bars in downtown Manhattan, and has been spotted on the runways of shows for Marni, Loewe, Y-Project, Kenzo, Simone Rocha, Louis Vuitton, and Marine Serre. Independent knitwear brands such as Mask On NYC and Ella Emhoff sell handmade balaclavas to meet the demand. Seven balaclava-lovers from across New York are interviewed about their enduring love for this season’s buzziest winter accessory.
