They’ve spent a lot of time training the dog to recognize what she smells like when she is stressed and her dog has specific things she does in terms of making her sit down, putting pressure (like a hug), or getting her moving again if she’s stuck in indecisiveness. The owner is very high functioning -she’s a college professor – but she gets overwhelmed and stuck once in a while. Her dog definitely helps with that. Her dog has been trained using scent pads that the owner collects on cotton balls (that apocrine sweat that we all have) that reflect several versions of her stressed reaction. Apparently, when the dog is wearing her “job” service dog vest, she takes it very seriously. And the owner has relaxed some just because the dog is always with her. I see them at the dog park ( our dogs play together really well) and I think it’s marvelous what that dog is being trained to do; they’ve got two more years of training outlined right now. This is serious, daily training, which has pointed out to me how much both the dog and the owner have to train each other. When they come to the dog park, the owner takes off the leash and says “okay, go be a dog”. (And my dog sort of taught her dog how to play like a dog. They start training service dogs very young. Because prairie dogs hesitate to make homes in or go through tall grass, creating tall-grass buffers between prairie dog colonies and adjacent private properties is one way to keep prairie dogs out of where they are not wanted without resorting to killing them. Growing tall grass is difficult in areas frequented by grazing livestock, so Defenders has purchased and installed several miles of solar-powered portable electric fencing along buffer areas to keep livestock out, allowing the grass to grow tall. All shelters are overcapacity, overwhelmed with daily surrenders by owners unable to keep their once loved pets for a variety of feeble excuses. They are being forced to kill many just to make room for daily incoming! Fostering saves lives and gives you an opportunity to not only save a life but see if they’re the one for you! Well, firstly, there are plenty of dogs (as well as other pets) that don’t get a “scientific diet”. I mean, Kibbles n Bits isn’t exactly healthy food for dogs, but obviously, people buy it or they wouldn’t make it. I imagine dogs eat better or worse diets depending on a combination of how much their owners can afford to pay and how educated they are about a healthy diet. A quick search of premium dog foods brought up a brand called Instinct. A 19lb bag of this stuff is almost $90. Even most dog owners who are not poor couldn’t afford this stuff, especially if they have multiple dogs or a large dog like a Great Dane or St. Bernard. Kibbles n Bits, meanwhile, is $27 for a 45lb. bag. I guarantee you a lot more dogs eat Kibbles n Bits than eat Instinct. Poor and middle-class people can’t afford to feed their dogs ultra-premium food any more than they can afford to feed themselves ultra-premium food. I’m sure Paris Hilton’s dogs eat only the finest, but Paris Hilton’s dogs also literally have their own mansion. I’m middle class, not poor, but I would guess that Paris’s dogs eat better and are much more comfortable than I am. I don’t begrudge them that, though, and one of the few things I actually admire about Paris Hilton is that she is clearly devoted to her dogs. People who are educated about pet care are likely to feed their pets the best they can, but that doesn’t mean all of those pets are getting the absolute best diets possible because most people can’t afford that, even if they’re not poor. Also, poor people have pets, too, and you can bet your patootie that their pets are not getting “scientific diets”. Poor people’s cats are getting Meow Mix and Friskies at $20 for 20lbs, not Orijen at $30 for 4lbs.

What I’m saying is, people’s pets tend to eat as well or as poorly as their owners can afford for them to eat, the same as people eat as well or as poorly as they can afford. So you might as well ask if it’s fair that some people get to eat better than others because some people can afford to, and not all pets get good diets. I would say more pets probably get subpar or mediocre diets than premium ones because it all depends on what their owners can afford to buy. But the idea that pets, regardless of species, shouldn’t get the best possible diet because there are poor people in the world doesn’t really hold up. Anyone who chooses to keep pets should feed those pets the best diet they can, and human poverty has nothing to do with it. I am not gonna sugarcoat this; it will rip your guts out. I have been there for my 26 mos old pup that died from leukemia, my 15-year-old Shih Tzu, and my 8-year-old Yorkie. I have two right now that are 15 years old+ and I know their time here is limited. I can tell you, it never gets any easier.
